The "Trenchers" in Whitby, England, is an institution when it comes to traditional British fish and chips, and enjoys an excellent reputation as one of the best restaurants of its kind in the north of the country. Since its establishment in 1980, this family-run establishment has become a must-visit for visitors to the picturesque coastal town known for its maritime history and fishing traditions. The restaurant combines classic British cuisine with a touch of modernity, placing great emphasis on fresh, high-quality ingredients. It offers both a restaurant area and a takeaway service, making it versatile and accessible – whether for a relaxed meal overlooking the harbor or a quick bite on the go.

Best seafood restaurants North England

The menu at "Trenchers" is a feast for seafood and British classics lovers. The centerpiece is, of course, the fish and chips, fried in traditional beef fat to give it an unparalleled crispiness and intense flavor. The freshly caught cod is particularly noteworthy, with its delicate, flaky texture perfectly complemented by the golden brown, hand-cut chips. The "Trenchers Fish Pie" is also a crowd favorite – a creamy mixture of various types of fish, topped with mashed potatoes and baked to promise warmth and comfort. For those seeking variety, there are dishes like the "Whitby Scampi", crispy breaded and served with homemade tartar sauce, or a refreshing seafood salad combination with crab and salmon. Desserts like the "Sticky Toffee Pudding" round off the experience with their sweet, sticky deliciousness.

I had a regular haddock chips and mushy peas. When it came I thought the portion size for the chips was a little sparce but infact it was just right without feeling stuffed and waddling away. The chips were good, the peas were good but the fish was excellent, the batter was so good and the fish flakey without being wet. Personal choice but I think Trenchers just wins it over the magpie, but only just. Both very good

We hadn’t been to Whitby for over 20 years. Decided to spend the day and have the renowned Whitby fish and chips. Reviews stated these were the best in the town. We were not disappointed. After a few minutes wait to be seated ( busy). Shown to a large booth for the four of us. Staff were lovely, very helpful and polite. Food arrived within 10 mins and was excellent. My wife ordered a regular fish which seemed a decent size to us. Part way through another fish was delivered to table as waitress thought my wife’s was to small. Needless to say we all left stuffed. Excellent food and service. 👍

Sadly this one star comes not from the fish and chips but the bull dust that was told to us to explain my warm pint of IPA beer was in fact correct. Ie a pale ale apparently is chilled at a warmer temperature than a dark ale. I beg to differ, and so does Google. When the bill was bought to us, and we sat our credit card next to the warm untouched beer which we had previously questioned, no acknowledgment was made at all even though they knew we were not happy.

Best Fish & Chips ever. Tartar sauce fantastic, chips light and fluffy. Cod with crispy batter to die for. Had small portion which was more than enough for me.

Haddock was fantastic, massive fish with a great bit of actual fish in and not just pumped up by the batter. Curry Sauce, Tartar Sauce, Mushy Peas etc all fantastic! Scampi to start was delightful, and the staff were so friendly! Can't recommend this place enough! Great meal by the seaside!

Two lovely meals on successive nights. The cod was creamy, sweet, succulent, the haddock denser, more fishy, the halibut (lightly floured rather than battered) gorgeous. The sorbet was a great way to end the meal. The waiting staff are attentive, charming and friendly and the service prompt. A great atmosphere, very comfortable booths and a very quaffable chardonnay.
